PowerNerds Unite!
Before I can even talk about this show I want to say thank you to Behind The Lens Collective. They teamed up with TesseracT to give non-binary or female photographers the chance to photograph this tour. Naomi and Tank let me know that I was approved and were responsive to any questions I had. I appreciate the heck out of them both and what they’re doing is so neat!
Alrighty now, let’s talk about the PowerNerd Tour!
TesseracT
I am a firm believer that every type of music have different colors associated with it. I think of neon when I think of pop music, shades of metal for dungeon synth, and haze for prog metal. You may be saying ‘haze isn’t a color’ and you’re right - but to me it’s a very translucent grey. If used correctly, which it was, it can also add a layer of mystery to a stage.
{shoutout to Mike on lights and all of the other amazing stage and tech crew that make these things possible}

TesseracT’s singer Daniel Tompkins has this ability to go from a harsher vocal to sounding so sweet that if I wasn’t there I don’t think I would believe you if you told me that the voice came from one person instead of multiple. Quite the range!
Devin Townsend
When I was not in the pit or exploring the theatre for different places to take more photos, I was standing and enjoying the show with some of my best friends. Two of them had seen Devin Townsend before, but this was my first time. Devin’s stage presence did not disappoint in the slightest! If I had to describe him I would say he’s a mix of TV Dad [specifically Phil Dunphy from Modern Family], Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb, and a dash of Crush from Finding Nemo.
“He rolled a 40 in charisma with one D20” - one of the friends I went with.
Because this is his last tour for a long while, I thought it was nice that they included some older songs, like “Love?” from the Strapping Young Lad days.
Closer to the end of their set there was a talking break, where he shared that they were all stuck in the elevator earlier in the day. The fire department had to come and get everyone out, which they were thankful for. I think it was just one of the ghosts wanting to hang out with them and they didn’t know how to ask and the idea simply backfired. The next song they played was “Gratitude”, which was fitting.
Enough words - it’s picture time!
