Choose Your Own Adventure with MC Chris
If you grew up staying up late to watch Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, MC Chris is a voice you have very likely heard before - especially if you watched Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
MC Pee Pants is voiced by the one and only MC Chris, who has also voiced various characters on Sealab 2021.
And on Friday July 18th, MC Chris came back to The Sanctuary to celebrate 20 Years of Touring. Along for this tour is fellow nerdcore rapper Swell Rell , with local support from Bathroom of the Future.
Standing outside waiting for doors to open is not usually one of my highlights, but the people who were there early made it all worthwhile. One of them was handing out glow sticks, there was a pirate, and just the general vibe of the line was a good time. Before doors had officially opened, MC Chris came out and needed some help getting things out of the car. I was too far back to hear what he asked, but one of the people who helped said that he asked if they were “able-bodied and able to assist him” which the group that I was talking to agreed that that was a appreciated way to ask [not all disabilities are visible, so the not assuming was nice].
So how does someone design a set list when they’ve been touring for 20 years? They don’t. Every set list for this tour has been on the fly with the audience raising their hand like a well-behaved class and MC Chris picking someone to choose the next song. I would be curious to see which songs were the most requested and hope that someone is keeping track to compare once this set of the tour is completed.
Then there was Swell Rell. When he came on the stage wearing his “Nerd Iz Cool” shirt and fantastically sparkly glasses [which he has at least two other variations of that are also awesome] I knew the performance was going to be fun. I mean, the first song he did was about Winnie the Pooh. What’s not to love? Additionally, CROCS. Are you reading this and know someone at Crocs, Inc that can get him sponsored by them? That would be great. Speaking of great - Swell Rell’s energy. At two different times during his set he had gotten into the crowd. Hugs, high-fives, and at least one selfie. There was just something about that that made the night feel so much more special.
To get this Festive Friday started, local support was covered by Bathroom of the Future. Nerd rock for punks, or pop punk for nerds. Bathroom of the Future is made by some of my favorite humans and their song “Capcom Girl” is frequently stuck in my head. It’s a pleasure to see them live and to call them friends.
Enough words - it’s picture time!
